Summary

The establishment of forest plantations using qualified and tested reproductive materials is done in Romania following the requirements of the European Union and OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). Seed orchards are aimed at producing genetically improved seed for use in operational forestation. So far, in Romania, the parent trees were usually introduced in seed orchards based on superior characteristics. This is also the case for Norway spruce – the main forest tree species used for operational forestation in Romanian mountainous regions.

The Romanian Forest State Service (RNP-Romsilva) is currently managing 58.7 ha of native spruce orchards which can produce enough seed to satisfy the local market. Our aim is to evaluate the genetic diversity in spruce clonal seed orchards and two natural populations using gene-based DNA markers. In addition, clone survival and spring phenology are to be assessed. The results will help us to elaborate recommendations (e.g. minimum number of clones) for the forest practice to improve the seed production technology in Norway spruce and to enhance the ability of RNP-Romsilva to obtain higher revenues.
