TRACE 2024 – Tree Rings in Archaeology, Climatology and Ecology
the annual meeting and international conference of the Association for Tree-Ring Research (ATR)
BRAȘOV, ROMANIA, 3-8 JUNE 2024
IMPORTANT: Be aware of the fact that Romania does not use euro yet! The local money is called lei or ron (they are exactly the same thing). The exchange is 1 euro = approximately 5 lei/ron. In order to have lei/ron, there are several options: exchange currency before you arrive to Romania, withdraw lei/ron from local ATMs or exchange currency at the local Exchange Centres (for this latter option, just pay attention that they apply a 0% commission). Card payment is also very common in Romania: shops, restaurants, hotels, etc.
TRAVEL to Brasov
BY PLANE: there are two options:
1). to fly to Bucharest and from there to go to Brasov either with a private transport company or by train (keep on reading for further details). The international Henri Coanda airport (also called Otopeni; https://www.airport-bucharest.com/) from Bucharest has many flight options and it is very well connected with many countries and cities around the world. Once you get to Bucharest, the best way to get to Brasov is to make a reservation to a private transport company. There are several such companies, with very similar prices: https://www.brasov-aeroport.ro/en/; https://jetcab.ro/en/; https://www.transferairport.ro/en/; https://direct-aeroport.ro/timetable/Otopeni-Brasov-en.html. The good thing about this option is that the drivers will pick you up directly at the airport (usually, although not always, at the arrivals terminal). The reservations for these private transport companies may be done directly on their webpages. Make sure that you make your reservations with some time in advance. The other way to get from Bucharest to Brasov is by train. The train option is not so straight forward as you will first need to get to Gara de Nord (the main railway station in Bucharest) using the public transport: the connection between the Henri Coanda airport train station and the Gara de Nord train station is every 40 minutes. Once in the Gara de Nord, you will need to ask for trains that go to Brasov. The local train company is called CFR (https://www.cfrcalatori.ro/en/) and you can buy the train tickets either online or directly from the train stations.
2). to fly directly to Brasov and from there to go to the city by public transport. The international Brasov-Ghimbav airport is new (opened in 2023), so it operates just a few, low-cost flights. Nevertheless, it is definitely worth it to have a look and see if you can fly directly to Brasov.
BY BUS:
There are many international bus companies that connect Romania with the rest of Europe. Depending on where you will come from, you will need to look for options in this regard.
BY TRAIN:
It is also possible to travel to Romania (mainly to Bucharest, Gara de Nord – see above) by train (https://bileteinternationale.cfrcalatori.ro/en/booking/search). Depending on where you will come from, this may be an option for you although it will most probably not be the fastest option … the Romanian railway infrastructure and trains are not very young.
ACCOMODATION in Brasov
The conference will take place very close to the city centre of Brasov, at the Aula Magna (Aula Sergiu Chiriacescu) of the Transilvania University of Brasov (41 A Iuliu Maniu Street, Brasov, 500091, Romania). Brasov is a very touristic destination, so you will find many accommodation options within a walkable distance. The only recommendation here is to book with some time in advance in order to find your most-desired accommodation place.
